Vacuum degassers are an essential component of the drilling fluid solids control system, helping restore mud density, improve drilling efficiency, and reduce the risk of gas kicks and blowouts.

Installed immediately downstream of the shale shaker and mud/gas separator, the vacuum degasser uses negative pressure to separate gas from drilling fluids before the mud proceeds to desanders, desilters, and decanter centrifuges. This process significantly enhances drilling fluid performance and contributes to safe and stable well control.

Operating Principle

A vacuum degassing unit creates a controlled vacuum inside a sealed vessel, causing dissolved and entrained gases within the drilling mud to expand and separate from the fluid. The gas is safely vented while the degassed drilling fluid is discharged back into the mud system for continued circulation.

This process restores drilling mud density, stabilizes viscosity, improves hydrostatic pressure, and enhances overall well control performance. Vacuum degassers are capable of removing more than 95% of entrained gas from drilling fluids under typical operating conditions.
