A Top Drive System (TDS) is a hydraulically or electrically powered drilling system mounted on the derrick or mast of a drilling rig. It rotates the drill string from the top, replacing the traditional rotary table and kelly drive system. Top drives provide continuous rotation while making and breaking drill pipe connections, improving drilling efficiency, reducing non-productive time (NPT), and enhancing operational safety.
