Operating Principle
A downhole flow-control valve can be configured to control or redirect fluid flow within the tool string. In one common intervention design, normal circulation can flow through the coiled tubing/tool string, while increasing flow rate causes the valve to divert flow through a secondary flow path at a predetermined pressure. Reducing the flow rate allows the tool-string pressure to bleed down.
This type of arrangement can be used to:
Control circulation during intervention
Apply pressure to downstream tools
Protect BHA components from premature activation
Control fluid delivery to downhole tools
Support inflatable-element BHA operations
Key Features
High reliability
Downhole flow regulation
Pressure/flow-responsive operation
Robust high-strength construction
High-pressure wellbore capability
Configurable connection sizes
H₂S-service configurations available where specified
Replaceable/redressable components on applicable designs
Data logging and monitoring options
Remote-operation options
Suitable for demanding well-intervention environments
Commercial downhole flow-control valves are available in different outside diameters, operating pressures, flow areas and thread configurations. For example, one established intervention design offers 1.688", 2.125" and 2.875" OD configurations with pressure settings up to 2,000 psi. These figures are reference examples, not specifications for the Driscoil-listed unit.
